Este talvez seja o mais completo dicionário aramaico-inglês já publicado, tendo sido baseado no grande Thesaurus Syriacos.

Prefácio

It was hoped that this abridgement of Dean Payne Smith’s Thesaurus Syriacus would have appeared together with or earlier than the last part of that work. I deeply regret the long delay, due chiefly to my father’s death in 1895, and to the consequent necessity of laying aside my own papers, in order to labour, in conjunction with D. S. Margoliouth, at the completion of the greater work.

[…]

ARRANGEMENT

As this abridgement is meant chiefly for beginners I thought alphabetical rather than scientific order to be preferred, all the more because ideas of scientific arrangement vary.

Participial adjectives are placed with passive participles under the Peal conjugation because of the difficulty of distinguishing one from the other, also because the verbal, adjectival, and substantival uses of these forms slide into each other.

When the same English translation is given to more than one conjugation of a verb, it will be understood that the Pael meaning is intensive, that the Ethpeel is’used of a single action and the Ethpaal of frequent or repeated action.

I do not give Greek words unless in use, and only a few proper nouns; exceptions are when a true Syriac word has the same form as a Greek word or as a proper noun, in such cases I have put the Greek or the name to avoid any possible confusion. Also proper nouns when an adjective is derived from them.

The Syriac fragments, at the end of the second Volume, are of considerable interest, having now for the first time been placed by the side of the Latin version. Their marvellous agreement with this translation, is another very satisfactory test of its close fidelity to the original; it is also particularly fortunate that these Syriac fragments represent, not any one or two of the books, but the entire work throughout its whole course; while one of the rubrics shews that the work as translated in the East, was apparently as bulky as that operated upon in the West. The peculiar interest of the portion of an epistle to Victor concerning Florinus may be noted; and generally, these fragments throw some light upon the subordinate writings and treatises of Irenaeus. They have been obtained proeter spem, and were the Editor’s reward for searching through this noble collection of Syriac MSS. of high antiquity.

O autor do livro ainda faz uma interessante constatação sobre o texto grego:

A point of some interest will be found of frequent recurrence in the notes; which is, the repeated instances that Scriptural quotations afford, of having being made by one who was as familiar with some Syriac version of the New Testament, as with the Greek originals. Strange variae lectiones occur, wich can only be explained by referring to the Syriac version. It will not be forgotten that S. Irenaeus resided in early life at Smyrna; and it is by no means improbable that he may have been of Syrian extraction, and instructed from his earliest infancy in some Syriac version of Scripture.

Eu entendo um pouco de aramaico, e nada de grego;  por isso não sei exatamente como o autor chegou a esta constatação. Mas seria interessante um estudo mais aprofundado para ver se é possível saber exatamente qual versão do Novo Testamento aramaico foi usado.

O Volume 1 ainda nos traz uma extensa Introdução sobre o Gnosticismo, e a vida e obra de Irenaeus.
